Core Concepts

The Key Difference From PoE 1

Critical Change Orbs of Scouring do not exist in PoE 2. You cannot revert a Magic or Rare item back to Normal (White). This single fact shapes every crafting decision you make. White items are rare drops and precious starting points — once you apply a currency that changes rarity, you cannot undo it except by using Chaos Orb, Annulment, or trading for a fresh base.

Item Rarity

Normal
White Items
No explicit modifiers. Rare drops — white bases are the cleanest starting points for targeted crafting. Apply Transmutation, Alchemy, or Essence to begin.
Magic
Blue Items
Maximum 2 explicit modifiers: 1 Prefix and 1 Suffix. Upgrade to Rare with a Regal Orb (adds 1 affix) or use as-is for budget gear early on.
Rare
Yellow Items
Maximum 6 explicit modifiers: 3 Prefixes and 3 Suffixes. The target for all endgame crafting. A Rare item with 2 mods is still Rare — rarity sets the ceiling, not the count.
Unique Items Unique items cannot be altered with most crafting currency. Exceptions: Divine Orb (reroll values), Vaal Orb (corrupt), Runeforging (add Runic Ward), and some Omen interactions. Catalysts also work on Jewelry uniques.

Prefixes vs. Suffixes

Every explicit modifier is either a Prefix or a Suffix. This matters enormously — knowing which slot a mod uses lets you plan Annulments, Omens, and Exalt additions precisely. Press Alt while hovering any item to see prefix/suffix labels, mod tiers, and item level.

Prefix Modifiers
Damage & Defense

Weapons

% increased Damage · % increased Elemental Damage · Flat Physical/Elemental Damage · % increased Spell Damage · % increased Spirit · Accuracy · Allies in Your Presence Deal Additional Damage

Armour & Jewellery

Maximum Life · Maximum Mana · Spirit · Armour Rating · Evasion Rating · Energy Shield · % increased Movement Speed (Boots only)

Suffix Modifiers
Utility & Resistance

Weapons

Attack Speed · Cast Speed · Critical Hit Chance · Critical Hit Bonus · +Level of All X Skills · Attributes (Str/Dex/Int) · Leech · Life/Mana Gain on Hit or Kill · Allies' Speed/Crit

Armour & Jewellery

Fire/Cold/Lightning/Chaos Resistance · Life Regeneration · Mana Regeneration · Attributes (Str/Dex/Int)

Rule of Thumb Resistances are always Suffixes. Life, Mana, and Damage mods are almost always Prefixes. This means if you want to Annul a bad Resistance mod, you can use an Omen to make the Annulment target Suffixes only — protecting your damage mods.

Item Level and Modifier Tiers

Item Level (iLvl)
What Tiers Can Roll
Item Level is set by the area where the item dropped — not your character level or the item's required level. Higher iLvl = access to higher-tier mods. Always press Alt to check iLvl before investing currency. A beautiful item with iLvl 50 cannot roll Tier 1 endgame mods no matter what you do.
Modifier Tiers
Tier 1 = Best
Every modifier has multiple tiers (e.g., Life might have Tiers 1–10). Tier 1 is the strongest. A Tier 8 Life mod might roll 10–20 Life; Tier 1 might roll 170–200 Life. Divine Orb rerolls the value within the current tier's range — it cannot promote a mod from Tier 5 to Tier 1. Use it only when the tier is good but the roll is low.

Hybrid Modifiers

Hybrid mods combine two stats into a single modifier slot, at values lower than the individual stat's full tier range. They're powerful when you want two mod types that share a slot type — an item can have both a hybrid Armour/Evasion mod and an individual Armour mod simultaneously. They still only occupy one affix slot. Identify hybrids with Alt — they show as two lines under one tier bracket.

Hybrid Example A weapon with "65% increased Physical Damage / +18 Accuracy Rating" as a hybrid Prefix can also have a separate "48% increased Physical Damage" Prefix — you get three physical damage affixes without spending two Prefix slots on the same type.

Local vs. Global Modifiers

Local
Affects the Item Itself
"% increased Physical Damage" on a weapon increases that weapon's base Physical Damage — shown in blue on the item. Only applies to attacks made with that weapon. The base stat it modifies will appear highlighted in blue when you hover.
Global
Affects Your Character
"+50 to Maximum Life" or "+10 to Strength" applies to your total character stats regardless of the item slot. "50% increased Global Critical Hit Chance" is explicitly tagged and affects all sources. Watch for the word Global — it changes the math significantly for spellcasters vs. attack builds.

All Crafting Currencies

Organized by function. "Tiered" currencies (Greater / Perfect) are covered in their own row — they add mods with a guaranteed minimum item level, useful for forcing higher-tier rolls.

Rarity Conversion

CurrencyFunctionTierNotes & When to Use
Orb of Transmutation
+ Greater · Perfect
Normal → Magic (1 affix)
Basic Starting point for targeted crafting when you have a white base. Greater guarantees mods of iLvl 45+; Perfect guarantees iLvl 70+. Use Perfect on endgame white bases to skip low-tier junk mods.
Orb of Augmentation
+ Greater · Perfect
Add 1 affix to Magic
Basic Fills the second slot on a Magic item (1 Prefix + 1 Suffix max). Greater/Perfect variants force higher iLvl on the added mod. Used primarily as intermediate step before Regal.
Orb of Alchemy
Normal → Rare (4 affixes)
Basic Shortcut from white to Rare. Rolls 4 random mods. Saves time vs. Transmutation path but gives no control over what you get. Don't use on high-value white bases — use Transmutation → Regal for more control.
Regal Orb
+ Greater · Perfect
Magic → Rare (adds 1 affix)
Basic The crafting path: Transmutation → Augmentation → Regal turns a 2-mod Magic item into a 3-mod Rare. You keep both Magic mods and add one more. Greater/Perfect versions force higher iLvl on the new affix.
Orb of Chance
Normal → Unique (chance)
Basic Gamble to turn a normal item into a specific unique of that base type. Low odds. Primarily useful if you're trying to self-craft a specific unique that drops rarely. On failure becomes Magic or Rare.

Adding, Removing & Replacing Mods

CurrencyFunctionTierNotes & When to Use
Exalted Orb
+ Greater · Perfect
Add 1 random affix to Rare
Advanced The core endgame crafting currency. Adds to an open prefix or suffix slot at random. NEVER use raw Exalted Orbs in 0.5 without an Omen — you have no control over prefix vs. suffix placement. Pair with Omens to force prefix-only or suffix-only adds.
Orb of Annulment
Remove 1 random affix
Advanced Removes one mod at random from a Magic or Rare item. Terrifying without Omens. With a directional Omen, you can target only Prefixes or only Suffixes, protecting the mods you want. Always identify which mod you want to remove and use the appropriate Omen first.
Chaos Orb
+ Greater · Perfect
Remove 1 random mod, add 1 random mod
Advanced Swaps one existing mod for something new. Low precision — use when an item has one garbage mod and you're willing to gamble the replacement. Not for items you care about. Better to Annul a bad mod and then Exalt the new one.
Divine Orb
Reroll numerical values
Advanced Randomizes the roll values of all explicit mods within their current tier range. Cannot change a mod's tier — only its roll within the tier. Verify you have a high mod tier before spending Divines. Press Alt to see tier before using.
Fracturing Orb
Lock one mod permanently
Endgame Locks a random mod on a Rare item with 4+ mods. Locked mods cannot be altered by any currency ever. Rare and expensive — use only on a perfect-tier mod you never want to lose. The item can still be crafted on normally once fracturing is applied.

Corruption

CurrencyFunctionTierNotes & When to Use
Vaal Orb
Corrupt — prevents further crafting
Final Step Always the last step. Four possible outcomes:
Good Add a random Enchantment
Good Reroll up to 3 modifiers (risky)
Good Add an extra socket beyond normal limits
Bad Nothing — use Omen of Corruption to remove this outcome
Item becomes Corrupted — no further crafting possible.
Architect's Orb
Post-corruption: destroy OR add corruption implicit
High Risk Applied after a Vaal Orb. Either destroys the item entirely or grants an additional corruption implicit. Extremely high risk. Only use on fully-finished, already-corrupted items where any outcome is acceptable. Not for crafting — this is gambling.
Vaal Infuser
Add quality above 20% cap, or Corrupt
Finishing Each use either adds quality (pushing above the normal 20% cap, up to 30%) or applies the Corrupt tag. Use only on finished items — if it corrupts, no further crafting is possible. The quality bonus is the goal; corruption is the risk.

Quality

CurrencyFunctionTierNotes
Blacksmith's Whetstone
Add quality to Weapons
Basic Increases weapon quality, raising base Physical Damage. Cap is 20% through normal means. Obtained by salvaging quality weapons at the Salvage Bench.
Armourer's Scrap
Add quality to Armour
Basic Increases armour quality, raising base defensive stats (Armour/Evasion/ES). Cap is 20% normally. Obtained from salvaging quality armour pieces.
Artificer's Orb
Add a socket to gear
Advanced Adds a Rune socket to armour or weapons. Obtained by salvaging gear that already has sockets. Chestpieces and 2H weapons can have up to 2 sockets; all other slots can have 1.
Orb of Extraction
Remove a Rune or Soul Core — destroys item
Destructive The only way to recover a Rune or Soul Core from an item without destroying it is… you can't. Orb of Extraction returns the Rune/Core but destroys the equipment. Never use on a valuable item. Socket your best Runes last.

Tiered Currency Summary

How Tiered Currencies Work Transmutation, Augmentation, Regal, Exalted, and Chaos Orbs each have Greater and Perfect versions. Greater forces any added mod to be drawn from the pool available at item level 45+. Perfect forces item level 70+ mods. Use these on high-iLvl endgame bases to skip the lowest tiers entirely and guarantee the added affix is at least within the useful range. They're particularly valuable with Exalted Orbs — a Perfect Exalted on a high-iLvl item won't waste a slot on a trash-tier mod.

Vendor-Side Currency

Disenchanting at Vendors
Shard Income
Sell Magic items to a vendor to receive Orb of Transmutation shards. Sell Rare items to receive Regal Orb shards. Multiple shards combine into a full orb. Disenchanting is your floor income — never just drop junk rares; always vendor or salvage them.
Salvage Bench
Material Recovery
Weapons/armour with quality → Armourer's Scraps or Whetstones. Items with sockets → Artificer's Orbs. Don't overlook this — the Salvage Bench is how you accumulate quality materials and socket currency passively while farming.

Targeted Crafting with Essences
Patch 0.5 Change Each item can only receive one Essence in Patch 0.5. Prior patches allowed multiple Essence applications on the same item. Now you get one shot — choose which Essence to use carefully based on what guaranteed mod your build needs most.

How Essences Work

Regular Essences
Magic → Rare with Guaranteed Mod
Apply to a Magic item. Upgrades it to Rare and guarantees one specific powerful modifier, while the remaining mods roll randomly. You keep the Magic item's existing mods plus get the guaranteed one plus random fills.
Best used on a white base first (Transmutation → get a good Magic mod → Essence for the guaranteed add), or directly on an already-good Magic base.
Perfect Essences
Add Powerful Mod to Rare, Remove One
Apply to a Rare item. Adds one specific, enhanced modifier and removes a random existing modifier. Higher guaranteed values than regular Essences. Used to improve items that are mostly good but need one key stat pushed higher.
The removal is random — use a directional Omen if you need to protect a specific mod type during a Perfect Essence application.

How to Find Essences

Essences appear as imprisoned monsters in crystalline formations during mapping. Click the formation 3 times to release the empowered monster, then kill it to receive the Essence. You can also Vaal Orb the formation before release to potentially upgrade the Essence tier. Atlas passives can increase Essence frequency and quality.

Key Essences by Slot

Essence of Enhancement
Armour Pieces
Guarantees up to 80% Increased Armour, Evasion Rating, and Energy Shield depending on the piece. The single most used Essence in 0.5 — almost every armour piece crafting recipe starts here.
→ Use on chest, boots, gloves, or helm bases to floor-guarantee a massive defensive percent roll. Then fill remaining slots with resistances via Exalt + Omens.
Essence of Hatred
Weapons
Guarantees Cold Damage. Used by cold builds to guarantee the elemental damage base on a weapon before other crafting steps fill in attack speed or critical modifiers.
→ Use on weapon base after choosing your physical or cold DPS weapon for cold-scaling builds.
Essence of Wrath
Weapons
Guarantees Lightning Damage. Core for any lightning attack build (Lightning Arrow, Ice Strike MA using lightning conversion, etc.). Locks in the elemental damage prefix before you add speed/crit suffixes.
→ Use as the first step on staffs, bows, or crossbows for lightning builds before adding suffixes via Exalt + Omens.
Essence of Anger
Weapons
Guarantees Fire Damage. Fire builds (Walking Calamity meteor builds, Explosive Shot Invoker) use this to lock the damage type prefix early in the crafting chain.
→ Same workflow as Wrath/Hatred — Essence first, then suffix-fill with Omens.
Essence of Greed
Armour & Jewellery
Guarantees Maximum Life. Used on rings, belts, or armour pieces when life is the primary stat you need guaranteed. Frees up the Exalt budget for resistances.
→ Best on rings or amulets where Life is your most important stat and you want guaranteed T1+ Life without gambling.
Essence of Sorrow
Armour & Jewellery
Guarantees Mana or Mana-related modifiers. Useful for Archmage Spark Stormweaver and other Mana-stacking builds that need guaranteed Mana values.
→ Use on rings or helmet for mana-scaling builds where guaranteed mana is worth the one Essence slot.
0.5 Workflow Summary 1. Find a high-iLvl white or Magic base of the right type. 2. If white, apply Transmutation to make it Magic and get one useful mod. 3. Apply your Essence — this upgrades it to Rare and guarantees your core stat. 4. You now have 1 guaranteed Essence mod + 2 random mods from the upgrade. 5. Use Annul + Omen to remove bad mods. 6. Use Exalt + Omen to add targeted prefix or suffix fills. 7. Finish with quality, runes, and Vaal Orb last.
Buying Essences Essences are tradeable. For builds with a clear core stat (e.g., Wrath for lightning, Enhancement for defence), buying the exact Essence you need is often more efficient than farming it yourself. Check trade for the specific Essence name — prices are typically in Exalted Orbs.

Meta-Modifiers from Ritual

Omens are found from Ritual encounters during mapping. They are meta-modifiers — items you activate by right-clicking, which change how the next currency orb you use behaves. They don't do anything on their own; they modify the action of the next orb applied.

How to Use Omens Right-click the Omen from your inventory to activate it. Your cursor will change. Then use the relevant currency orb as you normally would — the Omen's effect applies to that one use only. Omens are consumed whether the result is good or bad.

Annulment Omens — Control What Gets Removed

Omen of Dextral Annulment
Next Orb of Annulment removes a Suffix modifier only.
Use when you want to annul a bad Resistance or Attribute mod (both Suffixes) while protecting your Prefix mods (Life, Damage, Armour). Essential for endgame crafting where you've carefully built your Prefixes.
Cost: Lower tier — commonly found from Ritual. Use freely on B-tier items before upgrading to A-tier.
Omen of Sinistral Annulment
Next Orb of Annulment removes a Prefix modifier only.
Rarer use case — needed when a Prefix mod is the problem (e.g., a low-value Mana mod crowding out a Life slot) and you want to protect your Suffix Resistances. Less common than Dextral.
Cost: Similar to Dextral Annulment.

Exaltation Omens — Control What Gets Added

Omen of Sinistral Exaltation
Next Exalted Orb adds a Prefix modifier only.
One of the most important Omens in the game. Lets you target-add a damage, life, or armour mod (Prefixes) without risking spending a slot on a Resistance (Suffix). The 0.5 meta is built around this — Essence for your core mod, then Sinistral Exaltation for the damage prefix.
Cost: ~9 Exalted Orbs on trade. High cost but essential for endgame weapon crafting. Buy when ready to finish a weapon.
Omen of Dextral Exaltation
Next Exalted Orb adds a Suffix modifier only.
Use when you have all Prefixes filled and need to add a Resistance, Attribute, or Cast Speed mod. Combines with the Sinistral version to give you surgical control over filling remaining slots.
Cost: Similar to Sinistral. Buy paired sets when planning a full crafting session.
Omen of Catalysing Exaltation
Next Exalted Orb consumes all Catalyst quality on the item to increase the chance of adding a modifier matching that Catalyst's tag.
Niche but powerful. If you've applied a Catalyst to a ring (e.g., Fertile Catalyst for Life mods), this Omen increases the odds that the Exalt rolls a Life modifier. Destroys the quality in the process — use only on finished jewelry where you're fishing for one last specific mod.
Cost: Varies. Less commonly traded than the directional Omens.

Corruption Omens

Omen of Corruption
Removes the "Nothing happens" outcome from your next Vaal Orb use.
Critical for high-value items. A "Nothing" outcome from Vaal Orb is the worst — you spend a Vaal Orb, corrupt the item, and gain nothing. This Omen guarantees one of the three positive outcomes (Enchantment, Reroll mods, Extra socket). Always use on items worth 5+ Divine Orbs or more.
Cost: Moderate — worthwhile on expensive items. Compare the Omen price to the item value before deciding.

Recombination Omens

Omen of Recombination
Improves the odds of success on your next Recombinator use.
Note: The Recombinator was removed in Patch 0.5. This Omen was relevant in prior patches and may return in future leagues if GGG re-introduces the Recombinator mechanic. Do not stockpile for current content.
Not currently relevant in 0.5.
Omen of Abyssal Echoes
Rerolls all modifiers on an item — essentially a targeted Chaos Orb with unknown side effects.
Extremely expensive (~99 Exalted Orbs reported) and generally not cost-effective. The ability to reroll at will sounds powerful but the cost makes it prohibitive for most crafting scenarios. Mentioned in guides as "theoretically useful but almost never worth it."
Cost: ~99 Exalted Orbs. Avoid unless you have a specific reason and the math works out.

Omen Priority for a Standard Weapon Craft

Priority 1
Omen of Sinistral Exaltation
Force a Prefix add after your Essence. This is the most important Omen buy for weapon crafting in 0.5.
Priority 2
Omen of Dextral Annulment
Protect your Prefixes when removing a bad Resistance or Attribute Suffix. Have this ready before any Annulment.
Priority 3
Omen of Corruption
Eliminate the "nothing" outcome on Vaal Orb. Always use on any item worth more than a few Divines.

Runes, Runeforging, Expedition & More

Runes & Soul Cores

Ezomyte Runes From Runes of Aldur League
Socketed into gear slots (not Skill Gems). Runes add Enchantment-type bonuses to your equipment — elemental damage, resistances, attribute bonuses, and more depending on the Rune type. Can be replaced by socketing a new Rune, which destroys the old one. Cannot be removed and recovered without using Orb of Extraction.
Socketing counts: Chestpieces and 2-handed weapons can hold 2 Runes; all other slots (helm, gloves, boots, 1H weapons, offhand) hold 1 Rune. Vaal Orb corruption can add a bonus socket beyond these limits.
Soul Cores Advanced
Stronger versions of Runes with modifiers that cannot be found on standard Runes. Soul Cores provide exceptional bonuses — some builds are specifically designed around particular Soul Cores (e.g., specific damage types or support effects). Like Runes, they can only be removed at the cost of the item via Orb of Extraction.
Soul Cores are significantly rarer and more expensive than Runes. Socket them last — after all regular crafting is complete — since recovering them destroys the item.
Rune Ordering Rule Always socket Runes and Soul Cores as the final step of your crafting process, just before Vaal Orb. If you need to remove a Rune to continue crafting, you lose the item entirely. Plan your crafting order around this constraint.

Runeforging — Verisium Anvil

New in Patch 0.5 — Runeforging uses Verisium (a league-specific material) to add Runic Ward to armour and Unique items via the Verisium Anvil. Unlock the Anvil by completing the Runeseeker quest in Act 1.

What is Runic Ward? Runic Ward is a temporary survival buffer that activates after your Life is depleted — similar to how Energy Shield works, it absorbs damage that would kill you and gives a narrow window for recovery. It also interacts with specific Support Gems that gain bonuses based on current Runic Ward value.
Armour Runeforging
Item Level Determines Trade-off

Below iLvl 55: Grants Runic Ward with no downside. Do this on all campaign gear — free survivability buffer at zero cost.

iLvl 55 and above: Grants Runic Ward but reduces base defensive stats (Armour, Evasion, or Energy Shield). Preview the trade-off in the Anvil UI before confirming — the reduction varies by piece type and is largest on chest armour.

Unique Runeforging
Upgrades Lower-Level Uniques

Unique Weapons below iLvl 55: Increased damage.

Unique Armour below iLvl 55: Improved base defences + Runic Ward.

Uniques iLvl 55+: Runic Ward at cost of base defensive stats — same trade-off as regular armour. Kalguuran Unique items may gain modified or additional effects unique to their item design.

Unlock Order
Runeforging Progression
Act 1: Armour Runeforging
Act 2: Runic Inscriptions
Act 3: Unique Runeforging
Act 4: Ancient Runes
Runic Ward Synergy
Support Gem Effects
Several new 0.5 Support Gems scale with Runic Ward — builds using Runeforging heavily (e.g., Archmage variants) can exploit this for additional damage or defensive bonuses beyond just the survivability buffer.
When to Skip
iLvl 55+ Trade-offs
On high-iLvl endgame pieces, the defensive trade-off may not be worth it for builds that rely on raw Armour, Evasion, or ES. Always preview in the Anvil UI. Skipping is valid if the Runic Ward gain is smaller than the stat loss.

Expedition Crafting Vendors

Expedition encounters drop Kalguuran Artifacts, which are used at four vendor NPCs for targeted crafting. Each vendor serves a different gear slot and requires a specific Artifact type.

Vendor
Artifact
Item Types
Tujen
Black Scythe
Rings, Amulets, Belts — jewelry crafting
Rog
Order
Armour pieces and Shields
Gwennen
Broken Circle
Weapons and Quivers
Dannig
Sun
Exchange Sun Artifacts for other Artifact types. Also opens Expedition Logbooks.
How Expedition Crafting Works
Select an item from the vendor's window and pay 1 Artifact to begin. You receive a chain of 5 crafting steps, each offering random options to modify the item. Options may include adding a specific mod, improving an existing one, or risky rerolls. The limited number of steps means starting on an already-decent base matters enormously — you won't transform trash into treasure in 5 steps. Refresh vendor windows with Exotic Coinage if you don't see a good starting base.
Note: The Recombinator was removed in Patch 0.5. Expedition crafting now means the 5-step vendor chain only. If the Recombinator returns in a future patch, it will merge two items and attempt to keep selected mods from both.

Catalysts — Jewelry Quality

Catalysts From Breaches
Catalysts add quality to Jewelry (Rings, Amulets, Belts) that enhances specific modifier types rather than base stats. For example, a Fertile Catalyst adds quality that increases the value of Life modifiers; a Prismatic Catalyst enhances Resistance mods. Quality caps at 20% normally; the new Breach Ring introduced in 0.5 can go higher. Catalysts are consumed on use and obtained from Breach encounters during mapping.
Pair with Omen of Catalysing Exaltation — applying a Catalyst then using this Omen with an Exalted Orb increases the chance of rolling a modifier matching the Catalyst's tag type. The quality is consumed in the process.

How to Actually Craft — Step by Step

The 0.5 Standard Weapon Crafting Process

This is the three-step meta that emerged in Patch 0.5 and is used by most experienced crafters for weapons. Armour follows a similar structure with Enhancement Essence instead of elemental Essences.

1
Choose a High iLvl Base
Find or buy a base with high Item Level for your slot. Press Alt on any item to see iLvl in the top line. For endgame mods, target iLvl 80+ where possible. Prioritize Item Level over Required Level — they're different numbers. For weapons, look for the attack speed or damage type that suits your build in the base stats before spending anything.
→ Trade tip: Filter by iLvl ≥ 80 and sort by price. A white or 1-affix Magic base of the right type can often be bought for a handful of Exalts.
2
Transmute if White, Skip if Magic
If white, apply Orb of Transmutation (or Perfect Orb of Transmutation for an iLvl 70+ forced mod) to make it Magic. This gives you 1 affix. If you get a good mod (e.g., flat lightning damage for a lightning build), proceed. If not, you're locked in — no Scouring exists. Trade for a fresh base and try again, or proceed with a mediocre Magic mod and rely on Essence to carry you.
→ Don't Alch a good white base — Alchemy skips to 4 random Rare mods and you lose control of the process.
3
Apply Your Essence (One Per Item)
Apply the Essence that guarantees your most important stat. This upgrades the Magic item to Rare with the guaranteed mod plus 2–3 random mods. You now have: the good Magic mod you wanted + the guaranteed Essence mod + random fills. This is your foundation — every subsequent step builds on what you have now.
→ For weapons: Wrath (Lightning), Hatred (Cold), Anger (Fire). For armour: Enhancement (80% def boost). For jewelry: Greed (Life).
4
Evaluate and Annul Bad Mods
Press Alt and read every mod on the Rare item. Count Prefixes and Suffixes. Identify any mod that's unacceptable and check whether it's a Prefix or Suffix. If you need to remove it: activate the appropriate directional Omen (Dextral Annulment to remove a Suffix, Sinistral Annulment to remove a Prefix), then use Orb of Annulment. This frees up a slot for a targeted Exalt add.
→ Never use Annulment without checking prefix/suffix first. You may remove your Essence mod on bad luck — the directional Omen is non-negotiable on good items.
5
Fill Remaining Slots with Exalt + Omens
For each open affix slot, decide whether you need a Prefix or Suffix. Activate the matching Omen (Sinistral Exaltation for Prefix, Dextral Exaltation for Suffix), then use an Exalted Orb. This is how you surgically fill a 4-mod item to 5 or 6 mods without wasting slots on the wrong type. Repeat until all 6 slots are filled or you've hit your budget.
→ If you can't afford Omens, Exalting blind is acceptable on low-value items. On a weapon worth 5+ Divines, always use Omens.
6
Divine for Better Rolls (Optional)
If you have the right mods but some are rolling at low values within their tier, use Divine Orb to reroll numerical values. Remember: Divine cannot change tier — only roll within the existing tier's range. Use Alt to verify the tier number is good before spending a Divine. A T3 mod with a low roll can't become T1 with Divine — you need higher iLvl or different crafting.
→ Prioritize Divining your weapon's main damage mods. A T1 range roll vs. low roll is meaningful. Resist doing it on utility mods (cast speed, attributes) — the DPS gain is marginal.
7
Add Quality
Apply Blacksmith's Whetstone (weapon) or Armourer's Scrap (armour) to reach 20% quality. Quality improves the base stat — Physical Damage on weapons, defensive values on armour. 20% is the cap through normal means.
→ Obtain these from the Salvage Bench by breaking down other quality items. Build a stockpile passively.
8
Runeforging (Armour Only)
If your armour piece has iLvl below 55, apply Runeforging via the Verisium Anvil for free Runic Ward. If iLvl 55+, preview the defensive trade-off and decide if the Runic Ward gain outweighs the stat loss. Skip if the math doesn't favour it, especially on ES-based items where the trade hurts more.
9
Socket Runes / Soul Cores
Socket Runes and Soul Cores last. Once socketed, they can only be removed by destroying the item via Orb of Extraction. Choose the appropriate Rune for your build's needs — elemental Runes for damage, defensive Runes for survivability. Soul Cores go in your best item slot where their unique effect has the most impact.
→ This is a one-way step. Do not socket until all other crafting is complete.
10
Vaal Orb — Final Corruption
If the item is ready for its final form, corrupt it with a Vaal Orb. Activate Omen of Corruption first to remove the "Nothing happens" outcome — this guarantees one of: an Enchantment added, up to 3 mods rerolled, or an extra socket added. After corruption, the item cannot be modified further. This is the point of no return.
→ Never Vaal an item you're still planning to work on. Check your to-do list — Vaal is the absolute final step.
→ For high-value weapons, the "Extra Socket" outcome can be massive — it lets you add a Rune beyond the normal socket limit.

Armour Crafting — Simplified

Armour is Simpler Than Weapons The same framework applies, but the key stat you're guaranteeing is different. Find a Magic armour base of the right type (Armour/Evasion/ES or hybrid based on your build), apply Essence of Enhancement to guarantee the ~80% increased defensive stat, then fill Suffix slots with Resistances using Dextral Exaltation Omens. On boots, you want the base to already have Movement Speed before you start — Movement Speed is a Prefix and can't be added via Essence.

Common Mistakes

Using Exalted Orbs without Omens on a valuable item.
✓ Always pair Exalted Orbs with a directional Omen on any item worth more than a handful of Exalts. The Omen costs ~9 Exalts; a wasted Exalt slot costs far more in time.
Annulling without knowing prefix vs. suffix, losing an Essence mod.
✓ Press Alt every time before any Annulment. Identify the Prefix/Suffix of the mod you want to remove. Buy the correct directional Omen. Then Annul.
Using Divine Orb on a low-tier modifier hoping for a better roll.
✓ Divine only rerolls within the current tier's range. If the tier is wrong, no Divine will fix it. Check the tier number (via Alt) before spending a Divine — if it's T4 or worse, the problem is tier, not luck.
Vaaling an item before finishing all other steps.
✓ Corruption locks the item permanently. Complete every other step — quality, Runes, Runeforging — before Vaaling. Write a mental checklist.
Applying a second Essence to an item (not possible in 0.5, but players try).
✓ In Patch 0.5, each item accepts one Essence. Don't try to apply another — it will fail. Plan your single Essence use carefully before applying it.
Socketing Runes early in the process, then needing to remove them.
✓ Rune removal destroys the item. Socket Runes only after all crafting, Runeforging, and Vaaling is complete. Runes are the very last step.
Starting with a low iLvl base and expecting endgame mods.
✓ Item Level caps your mod tiers permanently. A beautiful iLvl 55 base cannot roll iLvl 82 Resistance tiers. Check iLvl with Alt before buying or crafting on any base.
Selling rare items without checking prefix/suffix balance for potential Annul recovery.
✓ A rare item with 2 great mods and 4 garbage mods is potentially a good craft target. Annul twice (with Omens) to reach 2-mod item, then Exalt fill. Don't auto-vendor rares — read them first.

Budget by Crafting Stage

Campaign / Early Maps
Zero to Low
Transmutation, Augmentation, Regal on any base you find. Don't buy currency — use drops. Disenchant everything for shards. Expedition crafting with cheap Artifacts for quick wins. Upgrade constantly rather than holding out for a perfect item.
T1–T10 Maps
Low to Medium
Start buying specific Essences (1–5 Exalts each). Use Annulment + Dextral Omen on almost-good items. Trade for high-iLvl Magic bases to Essence onto. This is when your primary gear slots (weapon, chest) get their first real targeted crafts.
T11–T16 + Endgame
High
Sinistral/Dextral Exaltation Omens (~9 Exalts each), Omen of Corruption, Perfect tiered currencies. Fracturing Orb on locked-in mods. Divine to perfect rolls. Vaal Orb with Omen on finished items. Budget 20–50+ Divines per item slot at this level.
